The BMW Naming System - Eight Different Series
The company names its car models using an alpha-numeric system. They are made up of letters and numbers that refer to each model's identity.
BMW has eight different series, each with a variety of sub-models. A number is assigned to each series. Even numbers refer to 2-door sedans, while odd numbers refer to 4-door sedans.
Currently, the BMW series is numbered 1 through 8. The 1-series models are the most affordable, while the 8-series models are the most advanced and thus the most expensive.
Ten Distinct Groups
BMW currently divides its lineup into ten distinct groups, with sedan-style models being assigned odd numbers (3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series), and sportier coupe-style models being assigned even numbers (2 Series, 4 Series and 6 Series). There are also four different groups that are designated by letters:
- X - SUV's and Crossover vehicles
- Z - Two-seat Roadsters
- M - High-performance version of existing BMW Models
- BMW I - Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles
Size Does Matter
The BMW engine's performance is determined by the last two digits of the number. Originally, this number was linked to the engine's litre capacity, but it is now used to represent overall power.
For example, a 5 series sedan could be designated as a 530i, 540i, or M550i and the 540i will be more powerful than a 530i.
In the past, the BMW numbering system also indicated the engine's displacement size. However, the numbering system is no longer representative of this.
For example, the 328i Sedan used to have a 2.8-liter engine but now has a 2.0-liter Twin Power Turbo inline 4-cylinder engine with 240 horsepower. As a result, the numbers roughly depict the engine's performance, with a higher number indicating more power.
More Than a Number
The letter at the end of each vehicle's name is used to indicate the type of fuel the vehicle uses. The letter “l" stands for gasoline, "d" for diesel, and "e" for plug-in hybrids.
However, BMW’s electric I Models have a I before the numbers in the vehicle name, which adds to the confusion. Thus, a BMW i3 is electric, whereas a BMW 330i is gas-powered.
